With the idea of using one for this review and six as unique groomsmen gifts, we “pre-ordered” seven TheRidge “classic” wallets (without the stainless steel money clip component , and received them about a month after we put in the order.  From the moment we opened the box, we were impressed.  The traditional wallet replacements came in a tasteful textured black box emblazoned with TheRidge logo.  TheRidge itself comes sitting atop a black foam bed and is enclosed in plastic.  Overall, the packaging makes TheRidge an easy and classy gift.

I’ve been using TheRidge as a replacement for my traditional bi-fold wallet for the last week or so, comfortably sporting 8 cards (one of them a thick ID badge with RFID) and some cash.  As advertised, TheRidge accommodates anywhere from one or two cards to about twelve cards (ten if including several bills in cash).  With a week’s use with an average of 8 cards and cash, the elastic bands don’t appear to have lost any of their strength, and cards slip out easily — but not too easily.

During a week’s use, TheRidge has received a number of compliments and inquiries.  The modern and bold design attracts the eye, and the lightweight aircraft-grade materials are comfortably light but heavy enough to provide the peace of mind that your credit cards are still in your pocket.  Our one complaint after a week’s worth of use lies in the realm wear and tear.  We can already see hairline scratches on the surface of the bottom plate depending on how we angle TheRidge.  That said, the device gets a free pass (or at least a discounted one) as it rode in our pockets with keys and change, surely contributing the scratches on the plate’s brushed aluminum body.

August says the Smart Lock will work with 90% of deadbolt locks on the market.  The device is powered by battery, allowing you to “plug-and-play.”  August will offer a iOS and Android app.

The device will run you $199.  No word yet on exactly what “later this year” means.  August can’t be a bad bet, though.
